The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched the Cleaner Trucks Initiative (CTI) to further decrease NO x emissions from on-highway heavy-duty trucks and engines. EPA last revised NO x standards for on-highway heavy-duty trucks and engines in January 2001. The Agency is not required by statue to update the standard.

The US EPA issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) for the Cleaner Trucks Initiative (CTI). The eventual CTI rulemaking will establish new, more stringent emission standards for NO x and other pollutants for highway heavy-duty engines. EPA is seeking input from the public and interested stakeholders.

The California Air Resources Board announced $3.7 million to fund air quality improvement programs that will pay for cleaner equipment such as hybrid truck and buses, zero-emission and plug-in hybrid cars, and motorcycles.
