Funded by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), the project is a joint effort between Advent, Alfa Laval and a group of Danish shipowners. The methanol fuel applied for the fuel cells is a pre-mix consisting of 60% methanol and 40% demineralized and de-ionized water (on a volume basis).

Alstom and the Province of Groningen, local operator Arriva, the Dutch railway infrastructure manager ProRail and the energy company Engie have signed plans for a pilot project to test the Coradia iLint, a passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells ( earlier post ), for the first time in the Netherlands.

Methanol reforming is a relatively simple process that converts a mix of methanol and water into a hydrogen-rich gas. Before the reforming can take place the fuel needs to go from liquid to gas form by evaporation, a process that requires energy. In a generic system that would mean using primary fuel, leading to lower efficiency.
