You don't hear as much worrying these days about the threat of Chinese automakers entering the U.S. Nor do you hear concerns over Chinese electric-car makers swamping sales of the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt, which have racked up more than 23,300 sales between them since December 2010. So the fate of the BYD e6.

Now that the 2011 Nissan Leaf and 2011 Chevy Volt have reached showrooms--a handful of them, anyhow--a new crop of electric vehicles will launch into the market for 2011. One of those may be the e6 all-electric crossover built by Chinese manufacturer BYD.

Interest in electric cars is surging: •Nearly 52,000 people were wait-listed as of mid-April for General Motors’ electric model, the Volt, due in November. Bob Lutz, the outgoing vice chairman of GM, has said the company will produce about 8,000 Chevy Volts in 2011. Chinese green-car subsidies on hold.

Plug-ins are slated to hit the Chinese market in earnest over the next few years. BYD’s plug-in hybrid F3DM went on sale (for fleet operators) late last year, and it’s supposed to launch its first all-electric model — the E6 — in the second half of 2009. and EU buyers.
