In such applications, a huge 500+ kWh battery will be required to reliably deliver 350+ km of range on a single charge, and full recharging, even with 350kW ultra-fast chargers, will take hours. This becomes an even greater challenge in a depot situation, where megawatts of power are required.

If we’re going to hit the numbers we need to hit for fleet adoption, we need as many places for those vehicles to recharge as possible. Those guys don’t have the wherewithal to finance a battery-electric truck that costs twice as much as a diesel truck, and they’re usually buying third- or fourth-owner diesels anyway, that are super-cheap.

Mercedes-Benz’s new generation of compact EVs will be able to recharge at double the speed of the brand’s current electric cars. The journey was from Stuttgart in the south-west of Germany to near Marseilles in the south of France, at normal speeds. And they also will be able to drive more than 750km on a charge.
