With charging stations few and far between on many routes and the relatively low driving range of many older EVs, it just didn’t make a lot of sense to take an EV road trip. Late on the first night, we rolled into an empty charging station located in the mountains in Truckee, CA. A way to diverge from the charging path.

The station consists of two large liquid hydrogen tanks on trailers, each holding over 800 kilograms of hydrogen stored in liquid form. FCEVs are still more efficient than diesel vehicles when run on hydrogen made from methane, but not as efficient as battery EVs charged from methane-generated electricity.

The pilot is being offered to select Ford Credit customers in California—including Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco; as well as in Portland, Oregon; Chicago and Washington, D.C. The bike folds and stores inside any Ford vehicle, where it can be charged while stowed. It runs through November.

FirstElement Fuels has opened the world’s first large-scale hydrogen fueling station for heavy-duty commercial trucks just outside the Port of Oakland. Primary funding for the Oakland station was provided by CARB and the California Energy Commission. Electricity that it says will come from the stored hydrogen.
