Exide Industries Ltd, India’s largest manufacturer of lead acid storage batteries and power storage solutions provider, and Switzerland-based Li-ion battery manufacturer Leclanché SA announced a joint venture to build lithium-ion batteries and provide energy storage systems for India’s electric vehicle market and grid-based applications.

Honda selected Toshiba Corporation’s SCiB rechargeable Li-ion battery to power the Fit EV. Toshiba will supply battery modules for the new car, which Honda will launch in summer 2012 in Japan and the US. The company will also promote use of the battery in other areas, including as a stationary power storage device in smart grids.

The car in question is the Coda, which features a 33.8kWh, 333V lithium iron phosphate pack with an eight year, 100,000 mile warranty. The Coda will be a four-door, five passenger car, that will be made available for around $45,000 - even less once a $7,500 Federal tax credit and additional state incentives are taken into account.
