A CNG vehicle reduces CO 2 emissions by about 25% compared to a gasoline-driven equivalent. Only a pure electric vehicle running on 100% renewable energy would offer a better overall outcome. The vehicle was developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), making it the first production electric vehicle created by a Chinese joint venture. In addition, the car will qualify for a free local Shanghai license plate exclusively for electric vehicles. The top speed is 130 km/h (81 mph).

The fuel cell and battery power an electric motor adapted from the e-Golf. The power electronics also integrate a DC/DC converter, which converts energy from the high-voltage battery to 12 volts to supply the 12-volt electrical system. At start, the fuel cell has not built up enough electrical power to drive the motor by itself.
