Saturn will remain in operation for the next several years, through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products. In the interim, if Saturn retailers or other investors present a plan that would allow a spin-off or sale of Saturn Distribution Corporation, GM would be open to any such possibility.

Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade. These European designs are perfectly good EVs, although their limited battery range and high price compared to the gasoline versions are major drawbacks. It debuted in the U.S.

The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate. nk City cars when Ford brought them to California to meet its ZEV Mandate obligation. Contracts for lithium batteries for the plug-in hybrid Saturn Vue and the Chevrolet Volt have received much press.

In the 1990s, as a mechanical-engineering professor at the University of California here, Dr. Frank produced another shocker. He yanked big engines out of American cars and replaced them with electric motors that worked in tandem with much smaller gasoline engines. Saturn and a 200-horsepower electric motor.

Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. The comparison keeps being raised, though studies are conclusive: The "well-to-wheel" emissions of electric vehicles are lower than those from gasoline internal combustion vehicles.

Small long-term evaluation program, including modeling of vehicle-to-grid building benefits and economics, begun with Southern California Edison, joined by EPRI, other utilities, US DOE. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10. Aims to get Saturn Vue on road in 2010; no production goal. Company says its focusing on gasoline and hydrogen.
