The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. Ford , Chrysler , Volvo Nissan , Subaru and VW have all indicated they will be bringing plug-in hybrids to the showroom floor for sale within the next few years.

Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, which is expected to sell for $40,000 when it goes on sales in the U.S. GM plans to launch the Volt in China in 2011. In early testing, reviewers said a plug-in electric hybrid sedan from Chinas BYD Co. BYD has said it is aware of these issues and is working resolve them.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. Vancouvers trolley bus fleet operates at 600 volts and god knows how many amps.
