PowerGenix, the developer of nickel-zinc (NiZn) rechargeable batteries ( earlier post ), has signed a product evaluation contract with HELLA, a Tier 1 supplier to major automotive manufacturers worldwide. In 2011, PowerGenix delivered its first production prototype product for the micro-hybrid stop-start market.

According to a new report from Pike Research, a rapidly growing global market for electrified vehicles—particularly plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles—will create a Li-ion transportation battery industry with nearly $8 billion in sales worldwide by 2015, up from $878 million in 2010.

Chery uses a NiMH battery system from Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions in the hybrid A5 ISG sedan.
