Toyota anticipates that the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid—unveiled earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show ( earlier post ) and the eighth hybrid in Toyota’s line-up—will receive EPA ratings of 34 mpg city / 31 mpg highway / 33 mpg combined (6.9, miles at lower speeds (below approximately 25 mph).

Useful to be sure, but more a green merit badge on a $30,000+ SUV with real world mpg still under 30 than a significant environmental choice. The 24 NiMH batteries in my Toyota RAV4 EV take the car 120 miles without gasoline. Toyota could deliver a plug-in hybrid highlander, get 20 miles all-electric and 75 mpg using NiMH today!

The 2023 UX 250h runs on 87 octane and is EPA rated at 43 mpg city/41 highway/42 combined. In the 210 miles we put on the CUV, averaging 65 miles per hour traversing Southern California highways, we had an average of 41.5 The nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is charged when applying the brakes or coasting.

MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery. The EPA rates fuel economy at 31 mpg city/28 highway/30 combined.

ARB could finally take some credit for cars with true ZEV miles once again on the road without depending on the ever-resistant, crusher-happy automakers.
