Toyota’s current plug-ins are: being used for auto show displays, brief demonstrations and university studies. They are very early “converted” prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries.

THS II uses two electric motors—MG1 and MG2—to supplement the charging of the hybrid system’s Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack, while MG2 assists the engine. Dimensionally, DC-DC converter’s output filter is smaller, lighter, and quieter for an improved passenger experience.

The report also says Toyota in collaboration with Japanese utility JERA, have commissioned the Sweep Energy Storage System, comprising lithium-ion, nickel metal-hydride and lead acid cells.

Toyota unveiled the new fifth-generation Avalon at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A new torque converter provides a wider range of lock-up operation (versus the outgoing 6-speed automatic transmission) to imbue a more enveloping and direct driving feel. Close ratios at the mid-range gears improve passing power.

Toyota anticipates that the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid—unveiled earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show ( earlier post ) and the eighth hybrid in Toyota’s line-up—will receive EPA ratings of 34 mpg city / 31 mpg highway / 33 mpg combined (6.9, l/100 km, respectively) for both 2016 RAV4 Hybrid models.
