German auto giant Volkswagen on Tuesday announced plans for a cheaper-than-ever electric model, as it faces increasingly strong competition from Asian rivals that have taken a lead in battery technology. These included two compact cars from its VW and Cupra brands, as well as two small SUVs, one each from VW and Skoda.

The Seres 3 SUV. It’s a Hyundai Kona-sized small SUV with a 120kW/300Nm single electric motor up front, 52kWh (useable) battery, 18kWh/100km energy use and a claimed 329km range (WLTP). Seres is a subsidiary of Chinese auto giant Dongfeng, and the Seres 3 has sold in China as the Fengon E3 since 2019.

Chinese automaker Chery is planning to make cars in Spain, where the EV market is at just 12%, half that of Portugal and France. Spain’s Industry Ministry said in a statement that the agreement would be formalized in the next few days, with Chery planning to start production in Barcelona, according to Reuters.

Chinese EV brand Leapmotor, which entered into a binding agreement to sign a joint venture (JV) with the Amsterdam-based Stellantis, concluded the deal in a short span of 7 months on Tuesday. The company is likely to introduce models from the A to C segments, and add more MPVs, SUVs and hatchbacks in future.
