Hyundai says the 800-volt battery pack will recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes (under optimal circumstances). This allows large battery packs to be charged at 250 to 350 kW. A carmaker to watch.

The Atto 3 is charmingly if idiosyncratically styled, has a decent equipment list, a range between recharges as much as 400km in the real world, acceptable performance from its 150kW e-motor and a comfy if not especially dynamic ride/handling balance. It’s the first ‘affordable’ EV that’s not felt heavily compromised or compromising.

In addition to a recent electric car deal with NISSAN Motors ( NSANY ), Portland General Electric, the Oregon state governor and GE have also announced a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors ( MMTOF.PK ) to develop and sell the Miev electric car with 85 mile range by 2011. Then I recall that my laptop batteries barely ever last four years.
