Interest in electric cars is surging: •Nearly 52,000 people were wait-listed as of mid-April for General Motors’ electric model, the Volt, due in November. In China, leading automakers BYD and Chery have announced plans to roll out their own electric models within the next two years. The third phase will be released around 2015.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. See Chevy Volt for latest.
