The most affordable vehicles—compact cars, compact SUVs and subcompact cars— had incentives between 3% to 4%, which is above industry average. The majority of non-luxury brands—including Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Kia, Mazda, and Subaru—all saw ATP declines between 0.3% month over month in January.

Honda and Kia showed the most price strength in the non-luxury market, transacting between 5% and 6% over sticker price in December. Luxury cars at all levels were selling below MSRP in December, along with luxury compact and sub-compact SUVs. In December, Ford sold more than 75,000 F-Series trucks, its best month in 2022.

Three European brands, Audi, BMW, and Mini, round out the top 10. Audi and BMW both declined from last year. The Model X SUV remained “Much-Worse-Than-Average” for reliability, with ongoing problems including the falcon-wing doors and center display screen. Audi tumbled three spots to seven on the list.

Since NHTSA selects vehicles for testing on the criteria noted above, there are, however, some competitive gaps in the data: no testing for Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 or BMW 7-Series, for example.
