Chile-based Ensorcia Metals , a specialist in the extraction and transformation of high purity lithium, will invest €200 million to build a lithium hydroxide conversion plant in Europe. Ensorcia uses IBAT ’s modular, mobile DLE (Direct Lithium Extraction) technology.

Batteries accounted for 27% of global lithium consumption in 2012, up from 15% in 2007 and 8% in 2002. In 2012, East Asia accounted for 60% of total global consumption with Europe accounting for a further 24% and North America 9%. Galaxy Resources commissioned a new 17,000 tpy LCE mineral conversion plant in China in 2012.

A new report from Pike Research forecasts that the global natural gas vehicle (NGV) sector is poised for a new period of growth. Globally, Pike Research forecasts that the NGV market will grow at a CAGR of 5.5% to reach just more than 3 million vehicles (including conversions) by 2015. million in 2008.

MIT and the IEA both have newly released reports exploring the potential for and impact of a major expansion in global usage of natural gas, given the current re-evaluation of global supplies. Globally, natural gas vehicles are a small fraction, on the order of 1%, of the close to 900 million vehicles in the vehicle parc.
