Although consumer tax credits for PHEVs enjoyed bipartisan support in both houses of Congress, concerns over other tax portions of the energy bill resulted in the entire tax package being removed from the original bill. The bill would provide a tax credit of between $4,000 and $6,000 for purchasers of a PHEV.

Kia recently invited members of the automotive press to drive the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid and X-Pro in sunny Palm Springs, California. Departing the Kimpton Rowan Hotel in downtown Palm Springs, we headed-up the Palms To Pines Highway (California Highway 74) that starts at 250-foot elevation and crests at 6,500. Room for adults.

Whatever it is, during our week driving the Tucson Hybrid through Southern California, it drew plenty of attention and comments. The EPA estimates fuel economy to be 37 mpg city/36 highway/37 combined. During our week in the Tucson Hybrid AWD we drove 463 miles through Southern California, averaging 38.1 Smooth running.

The styling is modern, the interior materials and fit-and-finish are as good as anything in this category, and the fuel economy, while not high, is acceptable.
