Shale oil production generates greenhouse gas emissions at levels similar to conventional crude oil production, according to a pair of new studies released by the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. These are shale formations with low permeability and must be hydraulically fractured to produce oil and gas.

This approach, ICCT says, enables an equitable comparison of airline fuel efficiency, regardless of business model, through the use of primary fuel burn data and an inclusive metric for transport service—a combination of mobility, measured by revenue passenger miles (RPM), and access, measured by departures (or the flight frequency).

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a funding opportunity announcement for up to $20 million ( DE-FOA-0001023 ) for applications for selection and award in FY 2014 that focus on the (1) methane hydrate reservoir-response field experiments in Alaska; and (2) field programs for marine gas hydrate characterization.

With a total crude-oil capacity of some 120,000 barrels per day, the refinery primarily supplies gasoline, jet fuel and diesel to markets in Washington and Oregon, and manufactures heavy fuel oils, liquefied petroleum gas and asphalt. Tesoro’s Anacortes refinery is located about 70 miles north of Seattle on the Puget Sound.
