The average fuel economy of new light duty vehicles bought in the USA leapt from October 2007 to April 2009 from 20.2mpg to 21.3mpg. In a companion study for the same period, it was also found that the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per driver from these new vehicles were lower in each month compared to October 2007.

US President Barack Obama has confirmed a new national policy that intends to slash fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions on all new cars and trucks sold in the USA. This speeds up the initial CAFE programme target set by the EISA 2007 which specified a minimum of 35mpg by 2020.

Answer: Ford’s broad general direction is less and less CO2 emissions, with the ultimate goal of zero emission vehicles. At Ford we have recently announced an electric Ford Focus will be available in the USA during 2011 and if all goes well I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar announcement for Europe but we aren’t sure yet.
