The partnership comes as the European auto industry readies for a “battery passport” that will trace the content and carbon footprint of EV cells sold in Europe. Launched in 2020, ACC has announced EV battery plants in France, Germany and Italy with a 7 billion-euro (USD 7.6 billion) investment.

Auto parts suppliers have been struggling with lower-than-expected demand for their EV components, as carmakers shift their focus toward producing affordable hybrid vehicles instead. Magna, which produces powertrains, along with assembling complete vehicles, signed agreements with Fisker in 2020 to engineer and manufacture its Ocean SUV.

Ford plans to survey 35 top global suppliers on their energy use and estimated greenhouse gas emissions as part of a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions within the auto industry. The study offers two main insights on the nature of clean energy jobs in the automobile sector: First, the paper documents that saving oil will directly create good jobs by driving demand for specific additional manufactured components. By 2020, the US job gain relative to 2008 could be as little as 49,000 or more than 150,000.
