Now that Fisker has managed to launch its 2012 Karma and start delivering cars to customers, the company is looking ahead toward expanding its model range. Reports today in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf indicate that it will unveil the production version of its 2013 Fisker Surf 'shooting brake' at the Paris Motor Show this September.

The 2012 Fisker Karma extended range electric car (plug-in hybrid) may have been sold on its sexy good looks, and sporty performance -- but now the luxury sedan has a more practical sibling -- the Fisker Surf. Unveiled today at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2013 Fisker Surf is a crossover wagon variant of the luxury sports sedan.

Another company operating as Fisker failed in 2013, with its remaining assets sold to the Chinese battery company Wanxiang. That earlier Fisker was eventually revived and now operates as Karma. This is the second instance of an EV startup founded and led by Henrik Fisker going bankrupt.

Last year, we identified six plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale during 2013. This year, the list gains three new entries (from BMW, Cadillac, and Mitsubishi) and loses one (the Fisker Karma). Not all plug-in electric cars rely on battery power alone; some also have gasoline engines as backups, for longer range or more power.

On 17 September 2013, Peter W. Hybrid Technology said that it is looking to restart production and sale of the Karma, and the development of other vehicles. By June 2011, the DOE decided to halt funding of its loan after persistent delays in production and performance problems from Fisker, it said.
