Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid EPA-certified for 100 MPGe combined; tops Volt and Prius PHV

The new Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid ( earlier post ), which goes on sale in the US this year, is now EPA- certified at 100 miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe) combined city and highway, and 108 MPGe in the city. Ford projects that its Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, due out in early 2013, will deliver 100+ MPGe combined.

With the US sales numbers for the first quarter of 2013 in, Tesla appears to be the leading seller of plug-in vehicles for that period, with more than 4,750 units of the model S sold in North America. Toyota followed with 2,353 units of the Prius PHV plug-in hybrid electric vehicle sold in Q1, up 158% year-on-year.

UC Davis ITS study suggests hastening consumer adoption of plug-ins will require innovation on the sales side

A study by researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis finds that buyers of plug-in vehicles (PEVs) are substantially less satisfied with the dealer purchase experience than buyers of conventional vehicles—with the notable exception of Tesla buyers. In some cases, dealers outright discouraged PEV purchases.

State law places no limit on the number of stickers that can be issued; as of 1 March 2013, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) had issued 23,223 white stickers. Under this program, DMV issued yellow stickers for the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid. This program expires on 1 January 2015. Yellow HOV stickers (expired).
