Volvo is taking the next step in its electrification strategy by producing test electric vehicles with range extenders. Tests of the concepts will get under way in the first quarter of 2012. The concepts all use three-cylinder flex fuel (gasoline and E85) engines to complement the front-wheel electric drive.

At the opening of Auto Guangzhou 2012, Shanghai General Motors launched its first localized new energy vehicle, the Sail SPRINGO EV. The vehicle was developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), making it the first production electric vehicle created by a Chinese joint venture. The Sail SPRINGO EV.

A123 Systems has entered a battery supply agreement with Fisker Automotive to supply battery systems for the Fisker Karma Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The Karma—an extended-range electric vehicle—is scheduled to be launched in late 2010. Project Nina is expected to launch in 2012.

The Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle and the Ford C-MAX Hybrid earned an acceptable rating in this test, while the battery-electric Nissan LEAF earned a poor rating. No one can touch the car until given the all-clear.
