General Motors’ Impact debuted at the 1990 Los Angeles Auto Show. In such an emergency, a bidirectional EV with charge to spare could come to the rescue. In principle, this problem might have been solved with software to govern the charging and discharging. And the auto industry had just canceled the battery EV.

US production is expected to start in 2010, with the first-year volume of 2,500 units being available to pilot and demonstration fleet projects. NK city, a compact electric vehicle that can travel up to 112 miles on a single charge. Plans ultimately call for up to 900 employees and a capacity of 60,000 electric vehicles per year.

The automaker has already begun idling auto plants and is warning of future closures to pay for its transition to EVs and to try to keep EV prices affordable.

The grid today could handle many millions of EVs charging late at night when rates are lowest. By 2012, we should have made some progress on this, just in time to re-elect Obama to his second term. To be honest, we’ll be very lucky to see that many. Smart meters and electric cars: a match made in efficiency.
