Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) plans to introduce eight hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery-powered (BEV) models by fiscal year 2015 in anticipation that demand for low-carbon, fuel-efficient automobiles will expand worldwide.

Suzuki Motor Corporation’s newly developed Swift Plug-in Hybrid, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009 as a concept ( earlier post ), gained type approval from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on 12 May. A total of 87 new BEV and PHEV production cars were presented worldwide between 2006-2013. The focus was in particular on electrical machinery, power electronics and various technologies for traction batteries. The largest share of PHEVs were found between a vehicle curb weight of 1500 kg (3,300 lbs) and 2000 kg (4400 lbs).

MMC has targeted top-of-class fuel efficiency (Japan market version) of 30 km per liter (70.6 MMC has so far been focusing its EV technology in the Japanese minicar class: MMC rolled out the i-MiEV EV in 2009 and will introduce its second mass-produced EV—the MINICAB-MiEV minicar-class light commercial EV—in December this year.

With the Audi MMI connect app, the smartphone can be used to remotely control charging and interior heating or cooling, call up the battery status and display data about past trips. The Q7 PHEV will arrive in dealerships in Germany in 2016, and will likely come to the US, although perhaps with a gasoline-engine variant.
