Five new airlines have been accepted as members of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group ( SAFUG ), an airline-led industry working group focused on accelerating the development and commercialization of sustainable aviation fuels: Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, TUIfly and Virgin Blue.

Halophytes thrive in arid land and can be irrigated with sea water, making them suitable for biofuel development; Abu Dhabi is thus a viable location for conducting a lifecycle-analysis study on the plants. Halophytes can be productive sources of biomass energy; for example, salicornia seed is 32% oil by mass.
