Biomass technology group BTG plans to set up a new high-tech technology company that can convert crude pyrolysis oil into diesel fuel suitable for the shipping sector. It will be the first refinery in the world for an advanced marine biofuel based on pyrolysis oil. The new facility will be operated by a new company named BTG-neXt.

Neste Oil’s NExBTL renewable diesel is to be trialed in day-to-day use in Finland by a fleet of road tanker trucks from the beginning of June onwards. The trial will last around a year and will involve 23 vehicles in Neste Oil livery operated by seven different companies.

Shell Oil Company is now producing oil from what it says is the world’s deepest subsea well at its Perdido Development. Neste Oil has decided to postpone construction of a new gasoline isomerization unit at its Porvoo, Finland refinery. Neste Oil has increased its capacity to produce NExBTL renewable diesel following the start-up of a second dedicated NExBTL plant at the company’s main refinery at Porvoo, Finland. With its second NExBTL renewable diesel plant coming online in Finland in about six months, Neste Oil plans to increase it purchase of palm oil from Malaysian from about 160,000 tonnes in 2008 to around 250,000 tonnes this year, according to Neste vice-president of business operations of renewable fuels Risto Karppinen.
