The ChangAn CA18 FlexDI Concept Engine shown at Auto China 2008. Ltd, China’s fourth largest automotive manufacturer, have entered into a joint development contract for a concept engine. If the program is successful, Changan plans to take the FlexDI concept engine to mass production in a Changan vehicle.

The combination of discrete, asymmetrically sized cylinders and fully variable valvetrain promises the ability to vary displacement ratios, bore-stroke ratios, compression-expansion ratios, compression-expansion phasing, and gas transfer phasing for engine optimization—i.e., a more efficient internal combustion engine.

Australia-based Revetec is designing what it calls the Controlled Combustion Engine (CCE)—a cam-drive gasoline spark-ignited internal combustion engine that is smaller, lighter, cleaner, less expensive to manufacture and that produces higher torque due to higher mechanical transfer than equivalent conventional engines.

China’s fourth largest car manufacturer Chongqing Changan Automobile Co and Orbital Corporation Limited have formed a joint development to work on a concept engine. If it proves successful, Changan hopes to take the FlexDI concept to mass production. It is not the first time that the two companies have joined forces.
