The US emitted approximately 7 gigatons of CO 2 equivalent in 2008 (the most current year for which such data were available). New technologies such as CCS are unfamiliar both to the public and to environmental regulators; and if experience is any guide, building the required levels of acceptance for such technologies can be an elusive task.
