In China, leading automakers BYD and Chery have announced plans to roll out their own electric models within the next two years. In 2008 the company released a test fleet of 450 Mini-E vehicles and is getting ready to announce its second phase. China overtook the US last year as the largest auto market in the world.

In early testing, reviewers said a plug-in electric hybrid sedan from Chinas BYD Co. But the gasoline engine in the BYD rattled and could be noisy when it kicked in, the reviewers said. BYD has said it is aware of these issues and is working resolve them. BYD has a long way off to. BYD electric sedan F3DM sells 80.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. Beginning in 2005, we excerpted individual statements of intentions by carmakers, but by the start of 2008, the number of comments became too numerous for us to track. Batteries not ready.

France’s auto industry is probably the largest Western auto industry that goes completely under the radar in the US. In South America BYD seems the only E-bus act in town. The 2008 $7.5k Claim to fame: Peugeot-Citroen jumps into the fray — but Zoe takes the cake. Domestic market not shabby either.
