US and Japan partnership to test methane hydrate production technologies on Alaskas North Slope

Green Car Congress

The US Department of Energy; the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation; and ConocoPhillips will work together to test technologies for producing methane gas from hydrate deposits on the Alaska North Slope. Methane hydrate consists of molecules of natural gas trapped in an open rigid framework of water molecules.

UT Austin to lead $58M study of methane hydrate in Gulf of Mexico; $41M from DOE

Green Car Congress

Methane hydrate—natural gas trapped in an ice-like cage of water molecules—occurs in both terrestrial and marine environments. Prior programs in Alaska have explored gas hydrate reservoir potential and alternative production strategies, and additional testing programs are in development. Click to enlarge.

Obama sets goal of reducing US oil imports by 1/3 by 2025; domestic and Western Hemisphere production, natural gas, biofuels, electric vehicles, fleet purchases

Green Car Congress

Meeting the goal of cutting US oil dependence depends largely on two things, Obama said: finding and producing more oil at home, and reducing dependence on oil with cleaner alternative fuels and greater efficiency. The Administration is pushing the oil industry to produce on leases already held.

Boeing, UOP, Masdar Institute and Industry Team Launch Study on Sustainability Of Renewable Jet Fuel Made from Halophytes

Green Car Congress

Halophytes can be productive sources of biomass energy; for example, salicornia seed is 32% oil by mass. Halophytes thrive in arid land and can be irrigated with sea water, making them suitable for biofuel development; Abu Dhabi is thus a viable location for conducting a lifecycle-analysis study on the plants.
