Several Green Goats are still being used for light duty service, Pike notes, but the vehicles have not been available since 2007. General Electric (GE) has built a plant to manufacture sodium metal halide batteries ( earlier post ), and is showing a prototype road locomotive using those batteries that it intends to bring to market.

The US Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has published a report summarizing interviews with participants in the hydrogen-powered buses trials underway in more than 20 cities around the world from 2002 to 2007. A Report on Worldwide Hydrogen Bus Demonstrations, 2002-2007 (FTA Report No. Resources. FTA-GA-04-7001-2009.01).

A January 2007 Pacific National Laboratory study shows that if we woke up tomorrow and all our vehicles could plug in, todays grid could support more than three-quarters of them charging at night without building a single power plant. There are companies that are reinventing the lead-acid battery to make it more competitive with lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride in terms of storage capacity versus weight, durability, and cold weather performance. Chevron owns the NiMH patents and have not allowed EV size batts to be built. In the U.S.
