A plug-in Toyota Prius for less than a regular Prius?
Now, I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but according to the MotorTrend article, the lithium-ion battery pack in the plug-in Toyota Prius actually costs less than the NiMH battery pack in the conventional Prius. kwh of battery, wouldn’t lithium be much cheaper than NiMH at $800 for 1.3 Good for just 70 mpg?

Toyota Plugging in with Nickel Metal Hydride
Well, surprise, surprise: "Toyota has the knowledge and experience with nickel metal hydride. I hope someone tells Mr Asakura about the NiMH batteries Toyota used in the RAV4 EV. Popular Mechanics got a look and briefing on Toyota's own plug-in Prius. And they said it couldn't or wouldn't be done.

Sanyo To Supply NiMH Batteries to Peugeot
has signed an agreement with PSA Peugeot Citroen to supply nickel-metal hydride batteries for diesel-electric hybrids. The Nikkei is reporting that Sanyo Electric Co. Peugeot wants to be the first car maker to put diesel-electric powertrains into production vehicles.

Lutz Chats Volt with "Fellow Bloggers"
Asked why not Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the Volt, at least to start, he says "NiMH just doesn't do it." And nickel mining is such dirty business we ought move right to benign lithium. Toyota to Stay with NiMH for Mass-Market Hybrids
Toyota Motor Corporation will continue to use NimH packs for most of its hybrid vehicles after three years of testing Priuses fitted with Li-ion packs. Bloomberg.
