Honda beat everybody to the production gasoline-electric hybrid game in the United States, putting the Insight in showrooms in 1999. Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here.

This included record sales of the all-new Edge, up 78%, and Escape up 5%. Sales of the lower volume Ford Focus electric did not suffer as much, but still posted a 5% decline from January-April 2015, from 522 to 494 units. This represents Mustang’s best April sales since 2006. Edge is now turning on dealer lots in just 10 days.

Compared with the 2006 5.5-liter Under braking, the kinetic energy of the wheels is converted into electric energy, which is stored in a new, optimized flywheel accumulator mounted in the cockpit alongside the driver. The first system is the recovery of thermal energy by an electric generator powered by exhaust gases.

Ford May Build a Plug-In Hybrid May 11, 2006 Ford Motor Co. Plug-in hybrids can be charged from an outlet and have greater range in all-electric mode. Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. Both Toyota and Ford are now producing a few prototype conversions of their own Priuses and Escapes for research purposes.)
