The University of California, Davis announced the appointment of Professor Nicole Woolsey Biggart of the university’s Graduate School of Management to the Chevron Chair in Energy Efficiency. Professor Biggart joined the UC Davis Graduate School of Management in 1981, and she was awarded the Jerome J. Chevron Corp.

University of California, Davis researchers will receive $2.8 million in new grants to study the use and impacts of escaped nitrogen from agricultural production. Nitrogen-based fertilizers help California farmers produce more than 400 agricultural commodities—vegetables, fruits, meats and dairy products—worth $36 billion a year.

Based on detailed model-level data for US light-duty vehicles from 1980 to 2006, a recent analysis by a UC Davis researcher found that if weight, horsepower and torque had been held at their 1980 levels, fuel economy for both passenger cars and light trucks could have increased by nearly 50% from 1980 to 2006. We certainly can reduce our greenhouse-gas production, but not by consuming less meat and milk. The developed world should focus on increasing efficient meat production in developing countries where growing populations need more nutritious food. Producing less meat and milk will only mean more hunger in poor countries.
