Toyota Motor Corporation and Subaru Corporation disclosed today that they have agreed jointly to develop a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for midsize and large passenger vehicles and jointly to develop a C-segment-class BEV SUV model for sale under each company’s own brand.

The Oregon Environmental Quality Commission adopted rules this week (3-1) to require all new passenger cars, trucks and SUVs sold in Oregon to be zero emissions (ZEVs) by 2035. These include both battery-electric and fuel-cell-electric vehicles, as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. Beginning in MY 2005, technology has been used to increase both fuel economy (which has reduced CO 2 emissions) and power, while keeping vehicle weight relatively constant.

As Toyota gets headlines for suggesting it will offer a few fleets a few plug-in hybrids in 3 or 4 years, it does what it can to take the myth-busting RAV4 EV out of private hands. The dealership did well with the RAV4 EV during the brief period it was offered, selling twenty one of the $42,000 electric SUVs.

The company also announced in June that it will build electric family sized minivans, SUVs and fleet vans with DOE funding (see article ) and it has formed a partnership with Daimler to provide powertrain components for the electric Smart car. The company hopes to begin selling the Fisker Karma in mid 2010 in Europe.
