Toyota Motor Corporation and Subaru Corporation disclosed today that they have agreed jointly to develop a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for midsize and large passenger vehicles and jointly to develop a C-segment-class BEV SUV model for sale under each company’s own brand.

The Oregon Environmental Quality Commission adopted rules this week (3-1) to require all new passenger cars, trucks and SUVs sold in Oregon to be zero emissions (ZEVs) by 2035. New gasoline vehicles will still be allowed for sale through 2034. Known as Advanced Clean Cars II , the set of rules builds on regulations in place since 2005.

Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. Beginning in MY 2005, technology has been used to increase both fuel economy (which has reduced CO 2 emissions) and power, while keeping vehicle weight relatively constant.

The dealership did well with the RAV4 EV during the brief period it was offered, selling twenty one of the $42,000 electric SUVs. And as soon as the word got out that a used RAV4 EV had been returned and would be offered for sale, the calls of interest began to pile up. The situation isn't as bad as it might have been.

A: I’m much more hopeful today than I was in 2005, simply because the car companies have painted themselves into a corner. Even the car companies are saying, “Well, no one’s trying to buy our SUVs, so for us to stay in business, we need to have other kinds of cars.&#. Certainly, we’re there with SUVs being on the sidelines.

The company also announced in June that it will build electric family sized minivans, SUVs and fleet vans with DOE funding (see article ) and it has formed a partnership with Daimler to provide powertrain components for the electric Smart car. Of all the ‘upstart’ green car companies, Tesla is the closest to breaking out into the mainstream.
