As cities and countries announce bans on diesel and petrol cars to fight air pollution and climate change, the appeal of driving emissions-free vehicles such as electric cars increases. In Portugal, the number of drivers also tripled in 2019 to reach almost 20,000 professional drivers.

Eleven EU Member States breached air pollution ceilings in 2015 mostly due to high emissions from agricultural and transport sources, according to new data and a briefing released by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The briefing includes information on countries’ 2015 emissions and national ceilings for different pollutants.

Registrations of new cars fell furthest in 2012 in Greece (-41%), Portugal (-38%) and Cyprus (-25%), while at the other end of the scale new cars increased by more than 12% in in Estonia and Hungary. Diesel cars have traditionally had lower CO 2 emissions than their petrol counterparts although this gap has narrowed in recent years.
