Popular Mechanics got a look and briefing on Toyota's own plug-in Prius. Well, surprise, surprise: "Toyota has the knowledge and experience with nickel metal hydride. The prototype PHEV's use two current generation Prius battery packs sandwiched together and modified to deliver a greater ability to charge and discharge.

The Motor Trade Association of South Australia has procured a Toyota Prius which has been upfitted with an aftermarket plug-in conversion, as part of its plans to develop hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicle training resources for automotive repair technicians throughout the state of South Australia.

They are very early “converted” prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries. Most importantly, these vehicles are not representative of the lithium-ion battery-powered next-generation Prius PHVs that will be delivered to lease-fleet customers later this year.

In the future, the PHV will be the perfect complement to Prius. In partnership with EDF, Toyota has been road-testing a PHV (equipped with a Nickel Metal Hydride battery) in Europe since 2007. The first wave of PHVs will reach Strasbourg in late 2009. Earlier post.).
