The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. Everything old is new again. The 34-month project.

They’ve seen Super Bowl ads for the GMC Hummer EV , or heard news about the lengthy, painful Chevrolet Bolt EV battery recall. Thus, the restructured GM was composed of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, while the Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands died. So, creating a new, all-electric brand may have been the smart decision.

It was expected to function in a similar fashion to the Scion brand with a compact, mid-size and SUV model. In addition, General Motors’ nearest thing to a green brand - Saturn, the brand under which it put out its first hybrids - is falling victim to the company’s restructuring following the global economic crisis.

General Motors: The company sold 1,534 units in April which consisted of: 523 two-mode SUVS (Tahoe, Yukon Escalade); 95 two-mode pick-ups (Silverado, Sierra); 547 Malibu hybrids; 338 Saturn VUE hybrids; 31 Saturn Aura hybrids. Meanwhile, the Ford Escape and Mariner hybrids saw sales drop by 40.5 per cent to 19 units.

The two-mode plug-in hybrid technology that was originally supposed to appear in the Saturn VUE will now make its debut in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. GM is hopeful that the Buick plug-in hybrid will be the first commercially available plug-in SUV from a major car manufacturer.
