But things changed for Cox when GM came out with a new version of the EV1 with a non-toxic nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery with more than twice the energy of the original lead acid battery. After pulling some strings, Cox took delivery of the new version of a leased EV1.

Lutz responds to the sense that GM might be pulling back from its commitment to the Volt that resulted from Sharon Terlep's Detroit News article a month or so ago. (My Or is lithium the new hydrogen? Asked why not Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the Volt, at least to start, he says "NiMH just doesn't do it." But hold on.

The acceleration was significantly better than my RAV, no doubt due to the Li-Ion battery pack weighing about 400-500 lbs less than the Toyota’s NiMH pack. However, the price range was news. Several other states are considering additional tax credits : Texas, Florida, Oregon and Washington, to name a few.

Although Think has been plagued by bad financial news recently, the company’s North American C.E.O., Even so, most next gen EV manufacturers are focused on lithium ion (and to a lesser extent NiMH) as the core technology to power their cars. Chevron owns the NiMH patents and have not allowed EV size batts to be built.
