The eagerly anticipated new heavy-duty large off-roader launches mid-2024 with an updated mild hybrid version of its predecessor 150 Series’ 2.8-litre litre turbo-diesel engine.

MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery. The RX 450h is a step-up from most crossover SUVs.

But there it is in a Detroit News Autos Insider piece today. Arguably, the Prius hybrid halo has enabled Toyota's more recent play for the American's profitable big SUV and truck market. "GM tries to unplug Volt hype" is not the headline I've been hoping to see out of Motor City this spring. Is GM just looking for its halo or a future?

Plug-In Conversions Corp www.pluginconversions.com of Poway, near San Diego, CA converts the Toyota Prius using NiMH batteries and the EAA-PHEV open source control system, and will provide kits to qualified DIY installers.
