Local Motors, creator of the first 3D-printed cars ( earlier post ), introduced the first self-driving vehicle to integrate the advanced cognitive computing capabilities of IBM Watson. The vehicle, dubbed “Olli,” will be used on public roads locally in Washington DC, and late in 2016 in Miami-Dade County, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Those are GMC’s personal estimates as a result of Hummer EVs are too weighty to require EPA trying out.

Driverless cars are poised to decongest personal car traffic, shrink our eco footprint, free up parking spaces and reduce the frequency of collisions by about 90%. Arizona-based startup Local Motors has unveiled Olli ( earlier post ), a 12-passenger minibus that may hit university campuses in Las Vegas and Miami later this year.

We drove the 500e through Miami traffic for three hours last week, giving us a chance to sample one of its strong points: quick cut-and-thrust urban driving. Miami is entirely flat and remarkably congested. It powers an 87-kilowatt (117-horsepower) motor driving the front wheels, with quoted torque of 162 lb-ft.
