Plug-in and fully electric cars operate between 200 and 800 volts. The nickel-metal hydride used in EV batteries is in maintenance-free sealed cells, so nothing gets in or out. All cars have batteries and electric systems; even so, they don’t short out or shock anyone.

Now Lutz envisions selling hundreds of thousands of Volts a year, probably priced below $30,000. I want to stick around to see the Volt come to market.

The MiEV runs on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged in seven or so hours on a 240-volt line. The customer will only pay a monthly fee about $240 (US Dollars) which includes a full maintenance service agreement; carbon offset payments and in some countries even all electricity used, and insurance.

There are companies that are reinventing the lead-acid battery to make it more competitive with lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride in terms of storage capacity versus weight, durability, and cold weather performance.
