Toyota unveiled the second iteration of its hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 truck ( earlier post ) during the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) Management Briefing Seminars in Northern Michigan. Our goal with the first truck was to see if it could be accomplished, and we did that.

Some makers suggest hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go; the most promising application seems to be long-haul trucking with few or no stops. But today, heavy trucks remain a diesel world. That’s about to change. However, heavy-duty electric trucks from traditional makers have started to hit the market.

Infrastructure to be deployed includes three CNG stations, one combined B20/CNG/Electric station, one L/CNG station, one hydrogen station, and seven electric chargers. New vehicles to be deployed include 55 CNG vehicles, 363 propane vehicles, 89 hybrid electric vehicles, and 56 neighborhood electric vehicles.

The primary customers right now are the ports—Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles­—and the ports around the country are usually in urban environments. Therefore, a lot of electric and hydrogen vehicles are being brought into that market quickly. Every one of the major OEMs is launching an electric truck series.
