Hybrids don’t have to be luxury vehicles. As an example, the UCS “Hybrid Scorecard” gives both the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a high “hybrid value” rating. But both models come with forced features that cost nearly as much as their hybrid drivetrains.

Combined reported US hybrid sales (from Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM and Nissan) in April totalled 21,735 units, a 45.5% Reported hybrid new vehicle share in April 2008 was 3.2%—the GM delivered a total of 1,534 hybrid vehicles in the month. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 129,898, down 31% compared with April 2008.

A total of 1,087 GM hybrid vehicles were delivered in the month. So far in 2009, GM has delivered 2,010 hybrid vehicles. TMS posted February sales of 11,814 hybrid vehicles, a drop of 47.3% Sales of the Prius dropped to 7,232 units, a decrease of 33.6%. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury February US sales totaled 96,044, down 48.2%

Yesterday we told you how hybrid sales continued their downward trend in the US. Overall, reported sales of hybrids dropped 45.5 per cent year-on-year to 21,735 even though it incorporated a full month’s sales for new vehicles such as the Honda Insight, as well as the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids.

Though 12 miles is well short of the 40 plus miles of the upcoming Chevy Volt, the costs associated with the hybrid system should also fall well short of the Volts costly power train. The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The plug-in Prius is expected to launch sometime in 2010.

GM delivered a total of 923 hybrid vehicles in the month. Passenger car sales were led by Camry and Camry Hybrid, which posted combined sales of 20,782 units, down 34.2% Camry Hybrid accounted for 5.5% The Prius mid-size gas-electric hybrid posted January sales of 8,121 units, down 28.6% from the year prior.
