Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced $10 million in research grants to spur production of biofuels, bioenergy and biobased products that will lead to the development of sustainable regional systems and help create jobs. Vilsack highlighted the announcement with a visit to Michigan State University, a grant awardee.

A regional interdisciplinary team led by Montana State University has received $6 million from the National Science Foundation to address questions about whether biofuels and carbon capture technologies can be sustainably introduced into the Upper Missouri River Basin.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded the University of Illinois a $10.6-million, million, five-year grant to transform two of the most productive crops in the US into sustainable sources of biodiesel and biojet fuel. Energycane will be evaluated at Florida and Mississippi, and Miscanthus will be tested at Illinois.

The new grant recipients were selected using a competitive merit-review process. The grants awarded were in response to RFP-I, a request for proposals the GRI Research Board issued on 25 April 2011. The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) and Virginia Clean Cities (VCC) at James Madison University (JMU) are requesting proposals from fleets in the southeastern US interested in converting eligible gasoline vehicles to run on propane autogas. The application deadline is Friday, 12 August 2011, at 5pm EDT.

The Québec-based company and its subsidiary, Agrisoma USA, is working with a network of 40 academic researchers from seven universities associated with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Science.
