Before Tesla, they were seen as nerdy golf carts, far from usable as “real cars.”

Lutz is a man given to hyperbole — called global warming "a crock of shit" — but in this case, hes right. Blending the MPG of SUVs and small cars understates the real consumption and rewards automakers for building gas hogs and unsafe micro cars which makes people want to buy "safe" gas hogs.
