The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. Everything old is new again. The 34-month project.

Many US drivers now have a vague idea that General Motors is doing something with electric vehicles. They’ve seen Super Bowl ads for the GMC Hummer EV , or heard news about the lengthy, painful Chevrolet Bolt EV battery recall. So, creating a new, all-electric brand may have been the smart decision.

General Motors: The company sold 1,534 units in April which consisted of: 523 two-mode SUVS (Tahoe, Yukon Escalade); 95 two-mode pick-ups (Silverado, Sierra); 547 Malibu hybrids; 338 Saturn VUE hybrids; 31 Saturn Aura hybrids. Meanwhile, the Ford Escape and Mariner hybrids saw sales drop by 40.5

The two-mode plug-in hybrid technology that was originally supposed to appear in the Saturn VUE will now make its debut in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. GM is hopeful that the Buick plug-in hybrid will be the first commercially available plug-in SUV from a major car manufacturer.
